The Corsican Shepherd

If the most popular corsican shepherd these days is Yvan Colonna – an independentist accused of the assassination of the French prefect of Corsica in 1998 – there is thankfully more to them than this sombre story.

Shepherds are iconic figures of corsica; they live the traditonal inland way of life, produce the food (brucciu, prizzutu and the strong-flavoured corsican charcuterie in general) walk the old mountain paths linking villages and carry the oral tradition of corsican history and language.

There are only a few of them left who try and perpetuate the tradition and can be seen walking the winter and summer “transhumance” through some of our villages.
